Mauro Magni (Roma 1962), pittore italiano. Vive e lavora a Trevignano Romano (Roma).
Allievo di Edolo Masci e Marcello Avenali. Si diploma nel 1984 all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma e frequenta poi la Scuola Libera del Nudo e il corso biennale di affresco presso la Scuola Comunale di Arti Ornamentali “S. Giacomo” della capitale.
Inizia ad esporre nel 1982 a Spoleto e a Palazzo Valentini a Roma. In parallelo alla pittura, ha realizzato dipinti per interni occupandosi anche di grafica e illustrazione per L’Espresso, La Repubblica, Tango, Avvenimenti, RAI 3 e Mediaset. Nei primi anni Novanta si trasferisce ad Amburgo e viene premiato a New York al concorso 3-Dimensional Award Show. Ha realizzato due pale d’altare per la chiesa di S. Giovanni Crisostomo a Roma e le scenografie per lo spettacolo teatrale Bento nato nel 2003 in Mozambico dove progetta e realizza tali scenografie insieme ad alcuni giovani da lui formati nell’ambito di un progetto sociale. Nel 2006-2008 ha insegnato “Metodologie, Strumenti e Tecniche didattico-espressive” presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Frosinone. Negli stessi anni si trasferisce a Trevignano Romano, sul lago di Bracciano, luogo che segnerà una svolta significativa nella sua poetica pittorica ampiamente espressa nel ciclo delle Montagne.
Inizialmente il suo lavoro si esprime attraverso l’uso di tecniche miste, tra segno grafico e collage, modalità che Magni riporterà poi nelle opere più recenti. Tra fine anni Novanta e primi Duemila la sua pittura si definisce attraverso una ricerca sui materiali e sulle iconografie. Tracce é uno dei cicli che Magni realizza su tavole con l’uso di pigmenti naturali, ricreando le suggestioni delle stratificazioni delle superfici come metafora della memoria.
In seguito ai viaggi in USA, Africa, India, Cina, Cuba i suoi interessi si sviluppano in relazione ad una maggiore interiorità e al palesamento di problematiche individuali e sociali. I primi lavori che denunciano tali influenze sono racconti di volti e di corpi femminili dove la narrazione emotiva scaturisce anche dalle tecniche miste e dal supporto metallico volutamente arrugginito.
Oggi la sua ricerca pittorica - sviluppata prevalentemente per cicli - prosegue l’indagine introspettiva del sé. I paesaggi, le torri, gli incendi, i ritratti e le montagne divengono sempre più luoghi onirici e metaforici, pretesti per una storia orientata in direzione di una riflessione e di un’accusa contro i mali dei nostri tempi.
Nel 2011 assieme a Angelo Colagrossi, Gianfranco Notargiacomo, Pietro Perrone, e altri artisti italiani viene invitato ad Hangzhou nell’ambito del gemellaggio culturale tra Italia e Cina. Dalle seduzioni di questo viaggio si definisce l’interesse per la terracotta – già manifestato in anni precedenti nella frequentazione della Bottega d’Arte Ceramica Gatti di Faenza – con la realizzazione del ciclo delle Torri, icone-archetipo che integrano, in bassorilievo e a tutto tondo, il suo ultimo ciclo pittorico. Nel 2014 realizza due grandi opere murali al MAAM di Roma, Museo dell’Altro e dell’Altrove di Metropoliz.

Having studied under Edolo Masci and Marcello Avenali, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1984 and then attended the Free School of the Nude and the two-year fresco course at the “S. Giacomo” Municipal School of Ornamental Arts in the Ital- ian capital. He exhibited his work for the first time in 1982, firstly in Spoleto and then at Palazzo Valentini in Rome. As well as painting, he has created interior paintings and worked in the field of graphics and illustration for L’Espresso, La Repubblica, Tango, Avvenimenti, RAI 3 and Mediaset. In the early 1990s he moved to Hamburg and received an award in New York as part of the 3-Dimensional Award Show. He has created two altarpieces for the church of S. Giovanni Crisostomo in Rome and the set for Bento, a play staged in 2003 in Mozambique, where he designed and created these sets together with a number of young people he had trained as part of a social project. From 2006-2008 he taught “Didactic and Expressive Methods, Tools and Techniques” at the Academy of Fine Arts in Frosinone. During the same period he moved to Trevignano Romano, on Lake Bracciano, a place that marked a significant transformation in his painterly style, as broadly expressed in the Montagne (Mountains) cycle.
Initially, his work involved the use of mixed techniques, includ- ing graphic symbols and collage, methods that Magni went back to using in his more recent works. Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, his painting was defined by his research into materials and iconographies. Tracce (Traces) is one of the cycles that Magni painted on panels using natural pigments, recreating suggestions of strati- fied surfaces as a metaphor of memory.
Following trips to the US, Africa, India, China and Cuba, he grew more interested in interiority and the revelation of individual and social problems. The first works to reveal these influences are images of female bodies and faces which emotional narrative is also triggered by the use of mixed media and by the intentionally rusted metal support. Today, his pictorial research mainly unfolds in cycles, continuing his introspective examination of self. His landscapes, towers, fires, portraits and mountains are increasingly dreamlike and metaphorical places, pretexts for a story designed to be a reflection on and an accusation against the evils of our times. In 2011, together with Angelo Colagrossi, Gianfranco Notargiacomo, Pietro Perrone and other Italian artists, Magni was invited to Hangzhou as part of a cultural twinning programme between Italy and China. That trip can be said to have inspired his interest in terracotta – an interest already displayed in the past when he frequented the Bottega d’Arte Ceramica Gatti in Faenza – with his development of the cycle of Torri (Towers), archetypal icons that supplement his most recent painted cycle in bas- relief and in the round.
